Exploring Jewels of Central Bosnia – Travnik and Jajce Tour

The Travnik and Jajce Waterfall Tour is a full-day journey from Sarajevo to the captivating region of Central Bosnia. This tour takes you through the most significant gems of the area—the vizier city of Travnik and the former capital of the Bosnian Kingdom, Jajce. Along with their rich historical and cultural landmarks, you will experience breathtaking natural beauty, including the iconic Jajce Waterfall.

TRAVNIK

After approximately an hour and a half drive from Sarajevo, we arrive at Travnik, a picturesque town nestled in the valley of the Lašva River and surrounded by the Vlasic and Vilenica mountains. Travnik holds a prominent place in history as a vizier city during the Ottoman Empire. Our visit begins at the renowned Travnik Fortress, a medieval-Ottoman stronghold. While exploring the museum complex within the fortress, you will also enjoy stunning panoramic views of Travnik and its surrounding landscapes.

A visit to Travnik wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Blue Water, the charming spring of a crystal-clear stream. Here, you can savor a traditional Bosnian coffee in a serene setting.

Next, we delve into the Old Town of Travnik. Highlights include the Sarena (Colorful) Mosque, celebrated for its intricate ornamentation and unique bazaar housed within the mosque itself. We will also visit the Ottoman vizier’s cemetery and see the legendary Yugoslav-era CIRO train with its nostalgic steam locomotive that once traversed narrow-gauge railways, evoking memories of a bygone era.

JAJCE
CITY CENTER OF JAJCE AND PLICA WATERFALL

Our journey continues to Jajce, located about an hour and a half from Travnik. Jajce is renowned as one of the most beautiful cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with its spectacular 22-meter-high waterfall situated at the heart of the city. From a prime viewing spot, you’ll marvel at the breathtaking sight of the waterfall and the Old Town. Adventurous visitors can even try the thrilling zip-line ride over the waterfall during summer—a truly unforgettable experience.

In the Old Town of Jajce, known as the 15th-century capital of the Bosnian Kingdom, you will explore its charming cobblestone streets. Highlights include the medieval catacombs (optional entrance), which served as an underground church and remain a popular attraction. You will also discover the historic Church of Mary and the Tower of St. Luka, each steeped in history.

PLIVA LAKES AND PLIVA WATERMILLS

Our exploration continues with a visit to the serene Pliva Lakes, located just a few kilometers from Jajce. These natural lakes offer opportunities for kayaking, swimming (in summer), or simply enjoying a coffee at one of the lakeside restaurants. A leisurely walk around the lakes provides fantastic photo opportunities.

Nestled between the Small and Big Pliva Lakes are the 500-year-old Pliva Watermills. These wooden structures, once essential for grinding wheat, are a testament to traditional craftsmanship. Of the 20 surviving watermills, one is still operational and used for flour production today.

Conclusion

After a full day of exploring some of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most important cultural and historical landmarks, as well as experiencing its awe-inspiring natural beauty, we will make our way back to Sarajevo. This tour offers an unforgettable journey into the heart of Central Bosnia, blending history, culture, and nature in perfect harmony.
